The students were here from Jefferson County Open School in an intensive course called “Pimp My Ride”. The 15 students were led by Jerry Milbrath, a 17 year teacher in Jefferson County, with the intention of teaching the 15 and 16yo students some basics of buying and owning a vehicle. The “intensive” course consisted of 3 days instruction including a visit from the “Alive at 25” campaign, addressing the destruction caused by drinking and driving. The second day included an insurance agent – informing the students of the necessity of insurance and the features and benefits of quality coverage.
The group showed for our appointment on time and excited. We made ourselves comfortable in the lower conference room and planned to visit for an hour and 30 minutes. I divided my presentation into three equal parts; how to be sure you are getting a market accurate price, how to be sure you are buying a quality vehicle, and lastly, how to identify a reputable sales and service facility.
Then I provided the group with 20 minutes of open question and answer. I enlisted the help of Robert Green and divided the group in half to be sure the Q&A session allowed everyone a chance to be heard.
The last 15 minutes were very fun, very hands on! We pulled out a piece of our inventory and generally walked around the vehicle, discussing the qualities of a superb used vehicle. The students were interested to know how many consumers never address the basic, yet vital points we were touching on.
My follow up call with Mr. Milbrath revealed that our meeting was a success. In fact, Jerry said the students felt our session was the most informative and organized of the three days. That felt really nice.
